EV Protection

Electric vehicles change the coverage math: fewer wear parts, but a high-voltage battery and drive unit that are extraordinarily expensive out of warranty. This center covers what EV protection means.

In-depth articles for this center are being written. This hub establishes the topic and its structure.

EVs have far fewer moving parts than combustion vehicles, but their most expensive components — the battery pack, drive units, and power electronics — carry replacement costs that dwarf a typical engine or transmission.

EV service contracts and battery coverage address exactly those risks, but the terms around battery degradation vs. failure, and where the factory warranty ends, are where buyers get surprised. This center explains them.

EV Protection: common questions

Do extended warranties cover EV battery degradation?

Usually not gradual capacity loss (degradation) — that’s often handled, if at all, by the factory battery warranty’s capacity threshold. Service contracts more commonly cover sudden battery or component failure. Read the terms carefully.

How long does an EV battery warranty last?

Factory EV battery warranties commonly run about 8 years or a set mileage, often with a minimum capacity guarantee. It varies by manufacturer.

What EV components are excluded from a service contract?

Wear items and, frequently, gradual degradation are excluded. Coverage of the high-voltage battery, drive units, and charging components varies by contract tier.
