EV Battery Coverage
EV battery coverage addresses failure of the high-voltage traction battery, the single most expensive component in an electric vehicle. It is distinct from a capacity guarantee, which addresses gradual range loss, and the two are frequently confused. Most service contracts respond to failure, while gradual degradation is typically handled, if at all, by the manufacturer.

Failure and degradation are different events
A traction battery can fail, meaning a module, cell group, or the battery management system stops working and the vehicle will not operate correctly. It can also degrade, meaning it continues to work while holding progressively less charge, which shows up as reduced range rather than as a fault.
These are covered by different mechanisms. Failure is the kind of event a service contract is built to respond to. Degradation is usually addressed by a manufacturer capacity guarantee that promises the battery will retain some stated percentage of capacity over a term, and a battery degrading normally within that threshold is generally not a covered event anywhere.
Why the distinction is consequential
Range loss is the outcome EV owners worry about and notice, which makes it the thing they assume they are buying protection against. If a contract covers failure only, an owner watching their range decline year over year may believe they have coverage they do not have.
Getting this right at the point of sale is what prevents a genuinely bad customer experience later. What else EV coverage should address
An electric vehicle removes many traditional failure points and introduces new ones. There is no engine, transmission, or exhaust system, but there are drive units, onboard chargers, DC to DC converters, thermal management systems for the pack, and extensive high-voltage wiring.
