Battery Degradation
Battery degradation is the gradual loss of usable capacity in an EV traction battery over time and charge cycles. It presents as reduced range rather than as a fault, and because the battery continues to function it is generally not treated as a failure by service contracts. Manufacturer capacity guarantees, where they exist, are what address it.

Degradation is normal, not a defect
Lithium-ion cells lose capacity through use and age. The rate is influenced by charging habits, particularly frequent fast charging and routinely charging to full, by heat exposure, and by total cycles. A battery holding less charge after several years is behaving as expected.
Because it is expected, it sits outside what a service contract typically treats as a covered failure. The battery works; it simply holds less. That distinction is invisible to an owner watching their usable range shrink.
What a capacity guarantee actually promises
Manufacturers commonly warrant that the battery will retain at least some stated percentage of original capacity over a term and mileage. If it falls below that threshold within the term, remedy is available. Above the threshold, degradation is considered normal.
The threshold is the whole substance of the promise. A guarantee set at seventy percent means an owner can lose almost a third of their range with no remedy available. That is not a hidden term, but it is one customers rarely register when they hear the word warranty.
How to set expectations honestly
The accurate framing separates the two things: this coverage responds if the battery fails, and gradual capacity loss is governed by the manufacturer’s capacity warranty, which for this vehicle guarantees this percentage for this period.
Both facts are checkable and specific to the vehicle. Presenting them together is what prevents a customer from concluding, three years later, that they were sold protection against the exact outcome they are now experiencing.
